What the mind thinks, the face shows

-Marwari Saying

The mind dictates the functions of our bodies. The body is nurtured by food as well as by the environment. It is food that shapes the mind. It is our mind that is where our desires are born and the body’s function is to fulfill the desires. The link that connects the two is vital breath. There are a variety of vital forces. Vital force comes into play with the thoughts of the mind. The thoughts and feelings all affect the bodily functions. The vital forces create these effects.

We possess a few rare maxims. If we understand them minutely, we may get a lot of new information:

1. Our mind is the creation of the food we take in.

Food is an exhaustive term. All that we eat is a type of food. The food creates the seven elements of our physical frame and the mind is born in the end. The food articles contribute to the constitution of our minds.

Contaminated food vitiates our thoughts. A number of shortcomings have been mentioned that our food may suffer from. Various sects have defined these defects in the food on the basis of their traditional thinking. There is a belief that the evil glance of the watcher may vitiate the food articles. That is why eating outdoors has never been endorsed in our country. Food that is not pure and hygienic is likely to cause defects in our mental gear. There is an anecdote commonly known:

A disciple went to the house of a goldsmith to dine. All the utensils were silver. He felt greedy and slipped one of the spoons into his pocket. On his way back, it struck him that he had committed a grave lapse. It was unwise of him to have done it. When he reached his Master, he admitted everything to him. The Master stated that the food that he had consumed belonged to a goldsmith. A goldsmith is called ‘pasyatoha r’, one who is capable of pilfering material in the very presence of the customer himself. That explains why that polluted food led you to commit theft. “You go back to his place and return the spoon. This shall counter the sin.” (This instance is an excerpt from the scriptures and goldsmiths are requested not to take it amiss.)

In today’s milieu what is there that we would not willingly commit to earn our bread? The above-mentioned instance may be found meaningful. Why our society gets into a quagmire of sin is also explained by the example. If our means are unwholesome, we are prone to misdeeds.

2. Work while you work; play while you play.

Whatever is done should be done wholeheartedly. Where the mind exists, there also exists the vital force. Mind prana (vital force) and vak (speech) always exist together. Where the prana or vital force is, vital functions happen. When the mind is at variance, the functions of life will go awry.

If you perceive the feeling of hunger, you will feel it in your stomach.
